Irene’s – Where do you work?

Dianna- I work in several places.  I work out of my home office in Ypsilanti. This is where I first started my career as, Heaven Abounds Therapeutic Massage.  I also work at RHC Physical Therapy and Wellness in Ann Arbor. I have been there for 12 years. And I also go to U of M one day a week to work on staff.

Irene’s – What are your specialties?

Dianna – My specialties are therapeutic massage, deep tissue, Myoskeletal techniques, hot stone, Swedish massage, aromatherapy, reflexology. Depending on what the client needs I may use 3 to 4 different modalities In order to be most effective for the client.

Irene’s – What was your greatest success with a client?

Dianna – My greatest success with a client is one who came in walking with two canes; he was in excruciating pain and could barely sit or stand. I saw him on a weekly basis and one day, after about eight months, he came in and forgot his cane! He went from walking with two canes to walking with none. I will never forget him.

Irene’s – Where is the first place you worked?  

Dianna – The first place I worked was out of my home and doing chair massage.  Chair massage was at the University Of Michigan Hospital, in the Triangle. I started both jobs the same week.

Irene’s – To what do you attribute your success? 

Dianna – I attribute my success to really caring about my clients and their well-being. Also, not being afraid to try new modalities. If one isn’t working, there is one that will. Keeping an open discussion with my clients has been very beneficial. They are not afraid to tell me when something hurts, when something feels better or when something isn’t working. Also, my education from Irene’s Myomassology Institute. I’ve had other massage therapists work on me, who were not trained at Irene‘s and I could tell a difference. Irene’s offers the best training out there and that’s my own personal opinion.

Irene’s – What is your favorite aspect of your career?

Dianna – My favorite aspect of my career is seeing people walk out of my office in less or no pain. Also getting referrals from people they know. I’ve had several go back to their doctors and tell them the type of work I did, that helped, and they’re no longer on pain medications. Of course, this is not true 100% of the time but a good majority and it’s very satisfying. I also teach them how to use doTERRA essential oil’s to help support their bodies.

Irene’s – What do you do for self-care? 

Dianna – My self-care consists of at least two massages a month. I put my hands (at the end of the day) in paraffin wax and sit for 20 minutes, daily. This makes my hands feel Brand New. I also use a roller on my forearms to keep them smooth and relaxed. I stretch between clients and I work out three days a week. My plan is to work out more. I eat a healthy diet and drink lots of water. One of the hardest things for me to give up was coffee, it was too dehydrating.  The results were worth it though.

Irene’s – What marketing do you feel has worked best?  

Dianna – I’ve tried a couple of things for marketing like advertising in different businesses. I made fliers and took them into businesses. I would ask them to put them up in their company lounge. I sent flyers to doctors’ offices, which worked really well. I have five physicians that refer clients to me; they also have my business card on their ledge as people check out.

I also donate my time when they have health fairs at parks or cancer walks. I’ve done an ALS walk and the relay for life. I always keep my business cards on hand so I can hand them to the people I work on. I actually have a regular client who held onto my card for two years before she contacted me for a full body massage.

Irene’s – What do you feel the biggest mistake you’ve made, and how did you address it?  

Dianna – I would say the biggest mistake that I’ve ever made was working way too many hours because I wanted to help everyone that came up to me.

Irene’s – Do you have any advice for new therapists? 

Dianna – My advice for new therapists is ground yourself before you walk into your clients room, be sure you use self-care on a regular basis. Watch your body mechanics.  It makes a difference in how you treat the client and yourself.

Don’t be afraid to try a different modality if one doesn’t work.  Always work within your clients’ pain tolerance.  I cannot tell you how many times a client came to me from a different therapist complaining the therapist didn’t listen to them. They are now my regular clients because I did listen. Don’t let this be you. Also, what your client says in the massage room stays in the massage room. Do not gossip or talk about your client to others unless it is to get advice on how to treat a certain issue. Donate some of your time for a good cause.  Remember we are in the business of helping people. You can support yourself on this income and it is so important to give back. Love what you do and going to work will be a joy and not a burden. Becoming a myomassologist is a wonderful way to help people. It is rewarding and satisfying.
